What You Could Receive:
You could receive a scholarship that will pay between $1000-$1500 each semester for two semesters. The scholarship recipient will be notified by early May.

Who Can Apply:
Available annually to graduating high school seniors showing talent and potential for continued leadership. (Must be a U.S. citizen.)

How To Apply:
Please submit a letter of interest, including a summary of academic recognitions, leadership involvement, community service and any other information that may be of interest to the MWC scholarship committee. (Application cover sheet)

Deadline:
Applications must be received by noon on April 3, 2008.  Please submit all materials to the Mountain West Center for Regional Studies, Utah State University, Logan, UT 84321-0735.

About Conway B. and Elaine W. Sonne:
Conway Ballantyne Sonne was born December 28, 1917, in Logan, Utah, second son of Geneva Ballantyne and Alma Sonne.  He graduated from Utah State University, B.S. 1940.  There he was elected to the Student Council, was a varsity debater, and served as president of three fraternal and honor societies.  Conway fulfilled an LDS mission in the New England states, served three years in World War II in the Army Quartermaster Corps, rising to the rank of 1st lieutenant.  In 1946 he graduated with an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business school and began his business career with Standard Oil Company of California.  His civic activities included directorships in the National Association of Credit Management, Opportunity Capital Corporation, Community Association for Retarded, Inc., the National Maritime Museum Association, and National Maritime Library.  He has served on the Palo Alo State High Council and bishopric of his church.  He has authored numerous articles and six books: Knight of the Kingdom, World of Wakara, What Would You Write?, Saints on the Seas, Ships, Saints, and Mariners, and A Man Named Alma.  Conway Sonne passed away in July 1995.

Elaine Wintch Sonne was born November 2, 1918, a daughter of Mary Evelyn Andersen and Wilford Jacob Wintch of Manti, Utah.  She attended public school and was the valedictorian of her high school.  She attended Utah State University on a scholarship where she met her future husband.  On campus she was elected Harvest Queen, vice president of the student body, national president of the Spur organization and a member of Phi Kappa Phi national honor society.  Upon graduation she received the College Citizenship Award given annually to an outstanding woman student.  She taught English for two years and then served in the American Red Cross in World War II.  After her marriage, she was active in her church and community.  The Sonne's had four sons: Alan C., Carl, Marc W., and Scott.
