Faculty Mediation

The Office of the Provost has established a faculty mediation process to complement existing university grievance procedures and to provide a voluntary alternative to the formal grievance processes available to faculty.

Each college, as well as Extension and Libraries, has a mediator; these faculty members, in addition to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, constitute a Board of Mediators. All members of the Board have attended mediation conducted by the State of Utah's Office of Dispute Resolution. This training emphasizes a model which uses respectful problem-solving, based upon individual needs and interests, and how to use this process to help people improve their relationships and handle conflict. Mediators are trained to:

  • Structure the mediation process through a step-by-step procedure,
  • Assist disputants in reaching mutually satisfying agreements,
  • Enhance negotiation skills,
  • Work with strong emotions respectfully and constructively,
  • Manage cross-cultural differences,
  • Respond to ethical dilemmas that arise in mediation, and
  • Develop strategies to deal with various elements of conflict.
