International Programs

COMMUNITY UNIVERSITY FRIENDS OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND SCHOLARS (CURISS)

Target Group: International students

Program Description: CUFISS is designed to organize and facilitate interaction between International Students and Scholars at USU and local community members.

CULTURAL AWARENESS PROGRAMS
(Vice President for Student Services; Housing & Residence Life)
Target Group: American and international students living in USU residence halls and family student housing

Program Description: A variety of programs are periodically offered in all USU residence halls to expose residents to the thoughts, customs, and foods of different cultures of the world, while introducing international students to American culture and peoples.

Successful programs include placing international students in American homes for Thanksgiving and other holidays: having international students talk about and show examples of their history, culture, and food; publishing newsletter articles focusing on international students (interviewed by other residents of housing staff); and sponsoring international nights where international students can share their native dress, food, and participate in discussions of their culture and customs.

ENGLISH CONVERSATION PROGRAM

Target Group: International students

Program Description: This program is designed for international students to improve their English speaking ability by providing opportunities to meet regularly with American students. The English Conversation Program serves many international students in need of better English skills. The program runs in fall and spring semesters.

INTERNATIONAL FRIENDSHIP COMMITTEE
(Office of the Provost; International Students and Scholars)
Target Group: Female international students and scholars and their dependants

Program Description: The purpose of the International Friendship Committee is to introduce international women to the American culture; to give women an opportunity to meet others from their home country, as well as countries from around the world; and to allow international women to share their country and culture with others.

The committee, with members on and off campus, coordinates a wide variety of activities, programs and exchanges. Meetings are held each Tuesday afternoon during fall, and spring semester (in accordance with the university calendar) from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Friendship Room in Aggie village. Programs include cooking demonstrations, crafts, holiday and cultural activities, and tours. Meetings are free, and babysitting is provided.

INTERNATIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAMS
(Office of the Provost; International Students and Scholars)
Target Group: International students and the Cache Valley community

Program Description: International Students and Scholars send approximately 400 students into the community each year to share ideas, geographical knowledge, culture, musical abilities, and other talents. They visit all kinds of organizations including: schools, clubs, church and civic groups, and scout programs. The programs are administered by international outreach specialists, who tailor presentations to specific request.

INTERNATIONAL PEER MENTORING
(Office of the Provost; International Students and Scholars)
Target Group: International students

Program Description: The peer mentoring program is to assist new international students in their adjustment to campus life at Utah State University. A mentor who has gone through the same challenges and difficulties proves to be an important facilitating force for a new international student to make a smooth transition to USU campus life. The program runs in both fall and spring semesters.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT COUNCIL (ISC)
(Office of the Provost; International Students and Scholars)
Target Group: International students

Program Description: The ISC is an organization representing all international students from over 78 countries. the mission of the ISC is to promote the interests and welfare of international students. To achieve this mission, we provide a variety of programs and services designed to encourage communication, campus involvement, and further understanding between the various national groups. The council sponsors International Women's Day, World Festival Banquet and Mr. and Miss International Pageant. Additionally, activities, dances and sporting events are held to promote interaction between international students, scholars and families attending USU.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ORIENTATION

Target Group: Newly arriving international students at USU

Program Description: This two day orientation helps international students become familiar with the legal and academic requirements by which they are bound at USU. The orientation also covers personal, social, and cultural aspects of life in the United States.

OFFICES OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND SCHOLARS (OISS) SERVICES
(Office of the Provost; International Students and Scholars)
Target Group: International students

Program Description: The Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) is committed to providing the necessary tools to international students and scholars for both their academic and personal success. The OISS is committed to providing leadership and support to enhance the academic, social, and personal interactions of international students and scholars while at USU, in the Logan community, and beyond. The office serves as the primary link between the students and local and government agencies around the world.

The director, oversees all services and programming for international students and scholars and serves as liaison to USU offices, federal agencies, professional organizations and other national and international institutions.

There are numerous activities at USU offered by the OISS, to help international students and scholars engage, interact, and assimilate university life. All these services/activities are intended to create a warm and inclusive environment in which all students can learn and interface in a culture-sensitive community of scholars.

UNIVERSITY POLICE INITIATIVE FOR UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
(Vice President for business and Finance; University Police)
Target Group: International students

Program Description: This program is designed to orient international students to the role of police departments in the Unived States, specifically at USU and in the local community. University police officers present international students with general information regarding their rights and responsibilities, alcohol-related laws, traffic laws, and university regulations.
