Outreach Aggie Tutoring Services (OATS)
  • OATS is a team of five people, three musicians and two visual artists who provide creative learning opportunities to young people in our schools and community. Team OATS works within a variety of school settings helping young people gain confidence in their abilities through collaborative endeavors.
USU Arts Bridge
  • The USU Access and Diversity Center (sponsoring agent of OATS) in partnership with USU ArtsBridge is launching a new Arts Ambassador program at Fast Forward Charter High School (FFCHS). OATS is a team of five USU students, three musicians, and two visual artists who as ArtsBridge scholars at Fast Forward Charter High school will mentor six FFCHS art ambassadors, two in music, two in visual arts and two in video production with a goal of helping the young FFCHS artists gain confidence in their abilities and an understanding of the USU arts community. The OATS team will serve as USU artist mentors as well as the musicians serving as USU ArtsBridge artists-in-residence throughout the school year on the Fast Forward campus.
America Reads
  • America Reads offers tutoring and mentoring programs to 18 local elementary, middle and high schools. In elementary schools we provide afterschool programs that include an hour of homework help then an hour of enrichment activities. In middle school we tutor students after school who are referred to us by teachers. In high school we do day time and after school mentoring (social and academic) with the students who are considered most at risk of not graduating. For the 2010/11 school year approximately 100 USU students are employed as tutors through Work Study to make this possible. America Reads is also a member of the Alliance for Youth (a partnership committed to sustaining out of school time programs for our young people) that includes Logan City Parks and Recreation, Cache and Logan School districts, Bear River Heath Dept. and Cache County 4-H.
Pursuing Academics With Success (PAWS)
  • PAWS is a community effort involving: Wilson Elementary, Middle School, Logan High South Campus, Utah State University Access and Diversity Center, BATC. Bridgerland Literacy, Family Resource Center, Foster Grandparents, Americorp, Vista, Work Force Services, English Language Center and the Logan City Library. The purpose of PAWS is to create and sustain multi-generational relationships among families, teachers and students. These relationships are essential to enhancing the quality of academic achievement. P.A.W.S will initially serve approximately 150 students ranging in ages from pre kindergarten, elementary, middle school, high school through University age students. The PAWS model will engage every age student thus impacting an entire community. USU students mentor high school students from Logan High Sough Campus, who mentor elementary students while receiving the wisdom and support of Wilson Elementary teachers and the Foster Grand Parents. The high school students also complete a 120 hour work force preparation course that will help them on the way to becoming para-professionals in our schools. Once a month on Saturday the mentors, students, parents, Foster Grandparents, and teachers get together on the USU Campus for afternoons of social learning experiences.
USU Latino Initiative
  • The USU Latino Initiative is a program comprised of university and community representatives, whose goal is to help the Latino community as a whole through higher education. The USU Latino Initiative works with the schools and Cache Valley community to help Latino students realize that the goal of higher education, whether that be a four year college or other training program, is within their reach. Through education, events, family liaison personnel, and collaboration between different groups that currently work with Latino students, the USU Latino Initiation is committed to reducing the high rate of Latino student school dropouts, raising the self-expectations of Latino students, and helping Latino families understand, and feel at home, at the university.
Americorp Vista
  • The USU Access Center houses two full time and one part time AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers. They are working on increasing and improving programming which serves multicultural youth in the Cache Valley, with a particular focus on Latino youth, with such programs as Latinos in Action, Latino Initiative, ESL Discovery, and the Bilingual Youth Corps. Val Allyse and Madeline Hart-Andersen are working full time here in Logan, and Amber Castillo is splitting her time between Orem and Logan.
