Cruel, Cruel Summer
July 24, 2008
It's HOT in Utah! And I am loving every minute of it. I realize I go to go school in Logan but trust me, I am a summer time person. I like warm weather, I mean, I really like it! Which goes to show, if I can survive four winters in Logan, anyone can.
Tonight I will embark into the world of. . . RODEO! I'm not talking let's go sit in the stands at the rodeo, I'm talking I am going to be in the rodeo! My friend Grady called me last night and said he signed us up for The Wild Horse Race in Stone, Idaho. Yes, I'm scared on many levels but I live by the motto, you only live once!
The truth is I'm a true city slicker so this should be quite the experience. From what I understand The Wild Horse Race consists of teams of three grabbing a horse by a rope, trying to control it enough so that one team member can ride it bareback through the arena. Don't worry, I'm investing in some cowboy boots, Wranglers and a jock strap. And the truth is, I really don't think I would have ever been asked to be in a rodeo if wasn't for my good friends from Utah State. Another blessed opportunity from AggieLand. Stone, Idaho here we come!
Summer, Summer, Summer Time!
June 11, 2008
Time to sit back and unwind! Summer '08 is well on the way and my apologies for not keeping you updated on things!
At the moment, as in right now as as I write this, I am at my internship with ABC 4 and it is great! Interning for ABC 4 in Salt Lake has been an incredible experience for an aspiring journalist like myself. And the truth is, I really think I only got the internship because of I'm an Aggie! My boss is of USU alum and we Aggies tend to look out for each other. I really love it here! They keep me busy too; anything from going on assignment with reporters to writing stories. I have learned tons.
Unfortunately, I'm only at my internship twice a week. Thus when I'm not at ABC 4, you can find me selling food storage! I can officially add food storage salesman to my long list of random jobs. I basically go door to door and ask people if they want to sample food storage. It's been great and honestly, as far as food storage is concerned, this stuff is the best! It's with a company called Daily Bread and we sale freeze dried food! It's food that can last for 25+ years! In fact, two nights ago, I tried 35 year old beef stroganoff. Not bad at all! It was especially good compared to the typical college diet I'm used to.
Other highlights of the summer have included: Cade and Ashley, two of my best friends, finally getting hitched; Coolio concert, he's back and yes, hearing Gangster's Paradise live is just as glorious as you'd picture it; and spending time with the family, I've had lots of nieces and nephews from out of state come visit me!
Life is good! I will make sure to update more frequently this summer. Oh, and if you need some food storage, you know who to get in touch with! (I'm a true salesman, one thing on the mind! Obnoxious, I know)
Aggie Radio Land
April 18, 2008
School is winding down! I know people say this a lot but honestly, the semester has flew by! It just doesn't feel like the close of a semester is already here but it is! I think the weather may have had something to do with that as it's been a bit of a longer winter than most. Nothing wrong with that though, it just builds character.
This week USU launched it's student produced radio station! Check it out! The best way to do so is probably through the web, radio.usu.edu. It's pretty sick! And if you happen to be listening on Friday from eleven to one, listen even more closely because yours truly will be on the air! That's me, Jazzy J. I had a blast today. Played a lot of indie music, mixed in with a few 80's classics (Beastie Boys, Billy Idol). A good time.
I'm out for now. Got to get back to the school work! It's crunch time.
Working For The Weekend
March 27, 2008
It's been a good week, busy but good. Friday is almost here and I must say I am looking forward to it! Due to Easter and Spring Break, it's actually been a while since I've spent a full weekend in Logan so it should be a good one. My favorite weekends in Logan are as follows:
Friday afternoon nap, go out to dinner with friends, party hopping, midnight movie and sleep in on Saturday! Followed by a Saturday morning run, Saturday afternoon study session and Saturday night date! And I love topping things off with a lazy Sunday. Weekends are the best!
Spring Fever!
March 18, 2008
Just got back from possibly the sickest spring break of all time! I went to Puerto Penasco, Mexico with about seventy other kids from USU. It was tons of fun. I love road trips and I love, love, spring break. Highlights from the trip include: the Mexican carnival, beach football, water-weenie rides in the ocean, hanging by the pool and the 15 hour drive! Like I said, I love road trips!
I'm back in Logan now and I am just trying to finish strong until the semester is over. Spring time is fun Logan, I just wish it were a little warmer this year.
Well, I've got a test tomorrow in BUS 3710 that I better get studying for. I didn't really prepare during the break.
February Holidays!
February 19, 2008
To celebrate President's Day I left town with some friends and headed to Vegas! It was a heyday of a time. Let's just say I was rubbing shoulders with the likes of Carrot Top and Hillbilly Jim of the WWE. This is no joke. Good times were had by all. If you pass through your time at USU without a couple of random road trip to Vegas, than I must say you are missing out!
Valentine's was also a successful holiday. I don't really have a girlfriend at the moment (surprise, I know) and so I decided to make the best of it as one swinging bachelor. I slicked backed my hair, dyed my mustache (usually the blonde-haired mustache just doesn't get noticed), threw on a pink turtle neck and handed out chocolates to all my classmates. I wanted everyone to have a Valentine this year. Later that night, I hit up the singles parties! That is one thing you can count on in Logan on Valentine's. Unfortunately I know about those parties all too well.
Other than that nothing too new is going on. School is going well. I should probably hit those books more though but shouldn't we all?
My Journalistic Roots
January 30, 2008
Word. With about a year or so until I graduate, I am now in some of my Senior classes and it's dope.
I really like Broadcast Journalism and am happy that I got my start in the field here at Utah State. It took me a long time to pick a major and actually stick with it but I'm happy that I finally found a home in the cooky JCOM department.
This semester I just started the Newscast class. Right now it's a little overwhelming but hopefully with some practice it will get better. I was filmed in an Aggie Kitchen segment last week and there were more than a few times where I found myself awkwardly staring at that camera. Like I said, with time I will figure it out. If not I may be in trouble.
If you get a second check out our Newscasts. The website is www.usu.edu/atvnews.
Signing off from Logan, UT, I'm Jason Sanders.
Celebrate Human Rights!
January 21, 2008
I'm all about Human Rights Day. And how did I celebrate? I actually set this day aside for homework! Now, listen if anyone will tell you this , it's me, college is not all about studying! But I just haven't put in the energy my studies deserve this semester so today was my day to catch up. And I did a great job! Just ask me anything about Present Value formulas vs. Future Value formulas.
The week has been good. My black eyes are going away and I'm starting to look not-so-tough anymore. Over the weekend I went to the Sundance Film Festival in Park City. We ran into the Dad from High School Musical! I don't think celebrity stalking can get much better. On a side note, I believe that's two weeks in a row I've written about that show, I'm a little embarrassed about it. I'm also taking a skiing class this semester. Friday was fun, except we are working on technique and for being a skier most of my life, I really have terrible technique. I guess that's one reason I'm in college.
The Deviated Septum That Once Was
January 16, 2008
I know there's only been a week and a half of school so far but I already took some time off. Unfortunately it wasn't for anything fun. Last Wednesday I had surgery on my nose for a deviated septum. I heard that Ashley Tisdale from High School Musical also received the surgery, whether or not we both really had deviated septums or just wanted a nose job, you'll never know! Just kidding, I really did need the operation (I'm sure Ashley did too) and a week later I'm breathing like I never have before! The surgery went fine, I had an excellent doctor, and I've enjoyed walking around campus with a couple of black eyes since I started school again Monday. Chicks dig a tough guy.
Life is good. It's fun to be back in Logan after the break, I can't stress that enough. In a way USU has become my home! No offense Mom and Dad.
This is the New Year
January 7, 2008
Back in the saddle again, so the Aerosmith song goes. I'm not a huge fan just to clarify; I just like quoting lyrics.
It's Monday and the first day of Spring Semester! Things are looking good. Returning to Logan is always exciting, honest. There's sort of an buzz of excitement around campus as you start your new classes, catch up with friends and back into the swing of things.
The break kept me busy and thus, I sort of slacked off on my blog. I was lucky enough to spend my most break backpacking through Europe! My friend Dave and I hit it up and we hit it hard. We made it to The Netherlands (I'm a quarter Dutch so I was quite excited!), Belgium, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. It was a great time. We did it the poor college student way, staying in hostiles and eating a meal a day but it was worth it! I really enjoyed Spain as in my head I am a better Spanish speaker than I am in reality.
I set some serious New Year's Resolutions. I for one am a big believer in New Year's Resolutions or in just setting goals in general. This year I am going ride my bike from Logan to Orem (I'm going to call it the Lotoro), start making paper (out of jeans! I met a guy in Seattle who does it all the time), read a few books in Espanol, read cnn.com daily, floss a little bit more, intern in New York and run my third marathon! I can do it! I suppose writing these across the world wide web will reinstate some extra accountability.
Snow and Song
December 2, 2007
Winter has arrived! It's here and it's glorious, and I'm ready to hit the slopes.
This semester I've been taking a voice class. It's really been a new experience for me. I've never been much of a singer but thanks to this class I'm reaching new heights in my life. Wednesday was our recital. Each student took a turn performing a solo. I sang "Comedy Tonight" and it killed! At least in my book it did.
The weekend was fun. Went a great date with a little gal from the tennis team Friday and ended up going on another fine date Saturday! Logan is the land of plentiful when it comes to pretty ladies.
The Home Stretch
November 26, 2007
Well, Thanksgiving Break has officially come and gone which means things are getting down to the wire, as far as the semester is concerned.
I had a good break. I'm headed down to St. George with the family. It was nice; I particularly enjoyed the weather because it is getting chilly in Logan.
Today was a good day because it is the start of something huge here at Utah State, let me explain. I am a huge Jazz fan. I grew up in the glory days of Stockton to Malone and it has been so much fun to see my team start winning again. The Jazz played the Knicks tonight (they lost but that's not what I'm getting at) and today we started JazzFever here in Logan. It's a little club we've started and every time the Jazz play you will find us at our friend Mary's house watching the game. We had about fifteen people show up tonight and for the Jazz losing, we had about as good as time as we could. I predict that by the end of the season we'll have nights where 100 people show up. Mark my words. The only thing that takes more of a priority than the Jazz games are Aggie Basketball games. That's kind of a derr statement.
Pastries and Shaving Cream
November 13, 2007
Today is only Tuesday but it feels like I've done so much since the week started. I think it's because I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning studying for an exam that I took this morning (I hope it was worth it!).
Before I hit the books last night I headed to 7 Eleven to grab an energy drink. While at 7 Eleven my roommate Sam and I made friends with the nice lady behind the register who ended up giving us all their left over donuts. It's amazing the fun you can have with a garbage full of pastries.
We ended visiting a few girls apartments, leaving them with some pastries and just for kicks we shaving creamed their apartments while we were at. So in an essence we were pranking them but at least they got something sweet out of it.
It made for a late night, especially since I ended up studying afterwards but your only in college once. Why sleep?
High Low
November 7, 2007
It's Sunday and typically on Sunday's I play a little game in my journal called High/Low. It's where I look over the past week and record the highs and the lows. This week was unique because a lot of events over the past week encompassed a little high and a little low, let me explain.
Monday night I played in my first intramural Futsal game of the season (Futsal is basically indoor soccer, I had never heard of it either). The high was playing playing soccer, it has been a while and the low was we lost two to eight (like I said, it had been a while).
Later that evening around midnight nine of us piled in the Cadillac and headed to McDonald's. It was a high because anytime you packed nine people in the Caddy it's going to be a good time and it turned into a low while waiting in the drive-thru we noticed my car start to smoke. We ended up turning the car off and having Grady and Stephen hop out and push the car through the drive-thru. It wasn't too big of a low because the gal serving us gave us some free fries for our hardship.
Halloween was a high/low. One, I dressed up as a nerd for classes high. And two, I ended up not going out at a night because I was working on a paper till the wee hours of the morning. I guess my costume was pretty fitting (ha, ha. . get it?).
The weekend was pretty much a high all around. A group of us headed to Park City for some shopping, swimming and a slumber party. I'd say the fact that I didn't get anything school related done this weekend added to the high.
