My scholarship has enabled me to dedicate myself full-time to my graduate studies. Well, almost full-time.

"As an undergraduate, I paid for my classes by working at Smiths Food and Drug in Logan. My scholarship has enabled me to dedicate myself full-time to my graduate studies. Well, almost full-time. I put in I don't know how many hours, juggling my class work with my thesis preparation and my family life. My husband Brett and children, Kristen, Torie, and Mitch are supportive. They know how much this means to me. I'm not sure exactly what I'll do after I finish my master's degree. But I know one thing for certain. It will involve early childhood education."
Tamara Shapiro
Designing by Design
Tamara Shapiro
That's the teaching and research theme of Tamara Shapiro, the first Sumner Margetts Swaner Professor of Landscape Architecture in Utah State's Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning Department.
The product of a national search, Shapiro is teaching classes and directing the research institute that was endowed, with the professorship, by Salt Lake landscape architect Sumner Swaner '84, and his mother, Salt Lake psychologist Paula M. Swaner-Smoot.
Swaner says Shapiro has an "intuitive grasp" of the methodology that he and his associates have developed for their not-for-profit Center for Green Space Design. As a Fulbright fellow in the Czech Republic, Shapiro learned about holistic planning that takes into account ecological, social and economic factors.
Since her three-year appointment began, Shapiro has gotten her graduate students involved in a green space plan for a rapidly developing area near Park City, Utah.
With the help of a variety of scholarships, I finished my college education
Daniel Sabo
Daniel Sabo
"I am a first-generation college student, and neither my parents nor I knew the first thing about college beyond the fact that it was far beyond our means financially. With the help of a variety of scholarships, I finished my college education in May 2003. I never arrived late for, nor missed, a class, save for the day I was chosen with several other School of Accountancy students to represent Utah State at a Deloitte & Touche Student Seminar."

Thanks to my scholarship, I can attend Utah State and study for both my bachelor's and master's degrees concurrently

"After I earned my associate's degree, I quit school and worked for two years, pouring concrete. I realized that wasnt for me. Thanks to my scholarship, I can attend Utah State and study for both my bachelor's and master's degrees concurrently. I should finish in December 2004. I still pour concrete, in the summer, to support my family. When I finish my civil engineering degrees, I'd still like to work with concrete structures. But, instead of pouring the concrete, I'll be the one designing the structures."
Gaylen Chandler
Gaylen Chandler
Utah State University business students are learning how to succeed and get ahead, but not from a textbook. They're learning from the pros, from teachers like Gaylen Chandler, the first recipient of the Robert B. and Beverlee Zollinger Murray Professorship in Entrepreneurial Studies.
The Murrays established the professorship so that others would enjoy the same success they did after graduating in the early 1950s. Robert Murray, for instance, translated his education and subsequent corporate management experience into a variety of successful startups. Two of the couple's five children also attended Utah State, and their educations contributed to their success as well.
In addition to his gift, Murray was one of the business leaders who came to campus last year as part of Chandler's Executive Leadership Seminar Series for the college's top students.
I owe much of this opportunity to my scholarship.

"I'm so thankful that I'm living the counsel of my chief, Manuleto, who told his people, the Navajo people, to go and get an education. Now I can fulfill my dream of helping my people. I owe much of this opportunity to my scholarship."
