Advising FAQ

Q: Who is my advisor?

A: To find out who your advisor is, contact the department of your declared major. You can also look up your advisor on Access. In addition, your advisor's name is listed on the top right-hand corner of your semester schedule (obtained in the Registrar's Office, TSC 246). If you are still unable to find your advisor, look at a list of advisors at http://www.usu.edu/advising/advisors/.

Q: How do I get my registration hold released so I can sign up for classes?

A: You will need to meet with your assigned advisor and they can release your hold.

Q: How do I know which classes I need to take?

A: Ask your advisor. Advisors are trained, friendly professionals. Do not rely on friends, siblings, or yourself to select classes. Advisors are available to help with class selection. Call 435-797-3373 to make an appointment.

Q: How do I register for classes?

A:
Main Campus: You can register for on-campus courses using the Access registration website at http://wwww.banner.usu.edu/ or in person at the Taggart Student Center, Room 246.

Continuing Education: You can register for broadcast and online courses using the Access registration website at http://wwww.banner.usu.edu/ or in person in the Taggart Student Center, Room 246, or in the Eccles Conference Center, Room 103. Registration for independent study courses (open-entry, year-long) must be completed in the Eccles Conference Center, Room 103. You can search for available Distance Education courses using their website at http://distance.usu.edu

Q: When can I register for classes?

A: A registration date will be assigned to you by the Registrar's Office based on your class standing (senior, junior, sophomore, freshman). Check your assigned registration date by looking in the front of the Schedule of Classes catalog.

Q: When is the last day to register?

A: Students may add classes for credit or audit through 20% of the session. An instructor's signature is required to add courses beginning the second week of the semester. All requests for audit registration must be approved by the instructor and be submitted to the Registrar's Office (TSC 246). See the General Catalog for the Adding Courses policy. Also see the "Semester at a Glance" section of the Schedule of Classes catalog for exact dates.

Q: How many credits should I take?

A: Typically, to be done in four years a student should take an average of 15 credits per semester. To be considered a full time student you will need to have 12 credits. However, some scholarships or financial aid packets have specific credit load requirements.

Q: What do I do if all the classes I want to take are full?

A: You can call the department of that class to see if there is a waiting list to get on, or you can sit in on the first day of classes to see if the instructor will sign you in using a Course Add/Drop form. You can also check from time to time on Access for available seats.

Q: Should I repeat a class?

A: This will depend on the class and your GPA. Most degrees require you to have a "C" or better in the core classes. Check with your major advisor. Generally the number of times a student can take the same class is limited to a total of three times (once, plus two repeats). The total number of repeats allowed at the University is limited to ten.

Q: When is the last day to drop courses?

A: See the General Catalog for the Dropping Courses policy. Also see the "Semester at a Glance" section of the Schedule of Classes catalog for exact dates. Fees will be refunded according to the Refund Policy.

Students may also be dropped from classes if they do not attend the first week or by the second meeting. However, this does not remove the responsibility from the student to drop the class if they do not plan to attend.

Q: I have heard that if I am undeclared I need to choose a major by the time I have 60 credits. Is this true?

A: Yes. If you are an undeclared student we strongly encourage you to move into a major. A student cannot graduate in the Undeclared major. With the new HB-XYZ law of 170 maximum credit tuition fee for in-state students, it is imperative that students have a plan so they won't be assessed the out-of-state tuition. Please talk with an advisor to explore your options.

Q: Where can I get my class schedule?

A: You can access your class schedule on Access or in person at the Registrar's Office, TSC 246.

Q: How do I change my major?

A: Complete a "Change of Matriculation" form with your advisor.

Q: How do I know which math class to take?

A: You can look at your math ACT score to see what level you should start with. You can also take a math placement test by contacting the Math Department (Lund 201). Their phone number is 1-435-797-0268.

Q: How can I explore different majors?
