*Recruitment/Enrollment Services Open Houses Jimmy Moore
Recruitment/Enrollment Services will be having fewer receptions and two open houses this year in an effort to bring prospective students to campus. By having open houses instead of receptions, students and parents will be able to get a feel for what Utah State University is all about. There will be one reception and two open houses. The dates are as follows:
Open House
Saturday, November 2, 2002, USU Ballroom, 1:00-5:00 pm
-Targeting high school seniors and parents
Reception
Wednesday, January 15, 2002, SLC West Coast Hotel, 6:00-9:00 pm
-Targeting all high school juniors and seniors, parents, and transfer students
Open House
Saturday, February, 8, 2002, USU Ballroom, 1:00-5:00 pm
-Targeting all high school junior, seniors, and parents
*Transfer Bash (October 25) Jimmy Moore & Aaron Anderson
The Transfer Bash will be held in the Eccles Conference Center on Friday, October 25th. There will be a variety of activities going on throughout the day that will educate the students about USU. At 10:00 am there will be a College Fair to introduce the students to the colleges we have on campus. The advising session will begin at 1:00 pm and go until 2:30 pm. The students are required to RSVP by Friday, October 18. John Mortensen will email a list on Tuesday of the students and where they are going to meet you. Many of the students who are going to transfer to USU will be fulfilling their SOAR requirement at the bash. The transfer students have been asked to bring a copy of their transcript. The advising portion of the Transfer Bash will be much the same as a typical SOAR day. The SOAR office will remove the SOAR hold for those students who purchase a SOAR packet that day. Jimmy and Aaron were very appreciative of the help that was given last year at the Transfer Bash and they hope this year will be just as successful.
*Spring SOAR (November 12) Aaron Andersen
As many of you know, Spring SOAR is usually a small session, because most of these students prefer the mail or online version of SOAR. However, it is still very important that the students have access to their advisors. All the information will be faxed to advisors in advance. As usual, the advising portion will begin at 1:00 pm. Aaron would like to thank you all for supporting the SOAR program and New Student Orientation. If you have any questions you can contact Aaron at 7-1125 or aaronand@cc.usu.edu.
*Graduation Application Responsibilities Janalee Johnson
Depth: Signed off by advisor
Upper-Division: Propose that it is automated
Many students are being sent to the graduation office to have their depth and upper division requirements checked, but they need to be taken care of by their advisor. An advisor will approve the depth courses, and credits that have transferred for upper-division will be decided by the articulation of the class. If a class transfers as upper-division (3000+), then the class will count toward the students upper-division credits. If a class articulates from a 3000 level class to a 2000 level class, then the credits will not automatically be accepted as upper-division. The advisor would be responsible for making an exception.
*Online Tutor Training Program Carol Rosenthal
The Academic Resource Center has developed an online tutor training program to be used as a supplement to the usual training course. This online program is also used when a student becomes a tutor in the middle of the semester and did not attend the actual class. The Academic Resource Center wants everyone to know that they can use the program to fulfill any of their needs. If you have tutors, peer advisors, or even peer employees in your department, this is a good tool to use when training them. The training program has 10 modules that include skills such as listening, working with diversity, and tutoring students who have different types of learning. The site also has videos, components where the student applies their knowledge, and case studies where students can actually discuss, online, what they have learned. The program requires a password because of copy write laws with the videos, but everyone at Utah State is welcome to use the program. The website is:
websites.usu.edu/arc.
If you have any other questions please contact Carol Rosenthal at 7-4027 or carolr@cc.usu.edu.
*Intent To Transfer Program Rachel Lewis
Rachel would like everyone to know that all the schools, except for BYU Provo, have been articulated and are online. Also, on Thursday October 24, 2002, there will be an articulation meeting in Main 119 at 3:00 pm. This meeting will discuss the articulation of five new schools. These schools are BYU Hawaii, Western Wyoming Community College, Boise State University, Idaho State University, and College of Southern Idaho.
Rachel Lewis has been working on a proposal for an Intent to Transfer Program (formerly called Dual Admission). Many students come to Rachel with concerns about why credits do not transfer to their major. With the new program, students will be given Major Programs based on Major Requirement Sheets. We will create major-specific articulations with participating schools: Snow College and College of Eastern Utah. The new program guides will help students better understand which classes transfer to USU. The student will be entered into the SIS plus system on screen 110. They will be able to contact an advisor at Utah State and will have a choice of purchasing a USU ID card to use at all student events. We are asking each department to begin thinking about the Major Requirement Sheets and which classes will be accepted from the participating universities. Rachel will be providing more information as the year goes on. Advisors may contact her Rachel at 797-8066 or at rdl@cc.usu.edu.
*Input on Possible Advising Positions John Mortensen
At NACADA, President Hall announced that USU would be hiring five new advisors. John is asking all of you to give your input as to where these positions should be allocated. John is thinking about only hiring four new advisors and using the extra money to pay nine-month contract advisors and faculty advisors to assist in advisors with the largest populations during SOAR. He is also asking for you to submit tasks that could be done by an advisor centrally. For instance, Rachel Lewis was hired to deal with transfer issues. Maybe there are other responsibilities, such as graduation check-outs, that could be handled centrally. Please forward your ideas to John. He will forward any recommendations to the Provosts Office.
*PinPoint Software Demonstration John Mortensen
To have this software installed on your machine contact:
Peg Hennon (Career Exploration) 797-1138
Carl Anderson (Program Installer) carlanderson@cc.usu.edu
This program is a good tool for students who do not know what to do with their major or cannot decide on a major. There are several entertaining segments that help to discover which career path would be the right choice. The software guides students through a series of exercises that analyzes their personalities and preferences. Contact Peg Hennon for more information.
*Online Advisor Evaluation John Mortensen
As of now, the evaluations will only be forwarded to the advisors and not the supervisors. For now, the results of these evaluations will not be summarized or used centrally. Advisors were given cards that they may give to students who meet with them. The card reads: Online Advisor Evaluations. How was your advising session today? Please take a few minutes to give some feedback about your advisor. Go to: www.usu.edu/ats/advisor-evaluation. The card has a place for advisors to print their names before distributing the cards to students. John will notify The Statesman and request they run an article about the evaluations. John views the current evaluation as a pilot program. He believes that the process will become much more formalized in the future.
*Other
Janet Karren will be leaving soon to spend more time with her daughter. Her advising position will be opening up soon and is currently being advertised.
