*Distance Special Education Advising/Mentoring Model - Ronda Menlove & Darcie Peterson
There is a critical need for special education teachers, especially in rural areas. This creates a problem of how to recruit and train people who are interested in teaching special education students. The Special Education Department has designed a technology-based program to provide
Special Education Bachelor's Degrees to extension students. The program has a website for students and advisors, which provides them with the resources to find the information needed. Advisors for the program are former students who have some background in the field and can guide the students as to what classes to take. Many resources, including local school districts, have been pulled together to make the program possible. For more detailed information see the attachment to this email or contact Ronda or Darcie.

*English Department Use of Technology - Jana Kay Lunstad, Kathryn Fitzgerald, & Melissa Bowles
The English Department has created a website to help keep their students informed. There are many advantages to having this website, including a place where students can enter what classes they have taken and see the classes they still need to take. This helps students to be prepared
before their meetings with their advisor. A link to the QUAD and registration is included so students can go to this one website and have everything they need. An email list for each of the four majors has also been created to inform students of the changes that have been made
and each track has a Major Requirement Sheet on the web and students can view them according to when they declared. Since this site has been created, membership to clubs has increased, students come to hear special faculty lectures, and transfer students have received the
information they have been looking for.

An alumni survey has also been put into place on the website. All graduates since 1995 have been invited to participate in the survey. The information has been summarized and provides students with a place to lookup average salaries, graduate schools attended, and the jobs or titles of graduates. This resource gives students some ideas as to what they may do with their degrees when they graduate. All the surveys have a code number on the bottom. If a student wants to contact the person, he or she may request the contact information from Jana Kay. Jana Kay
will contact the graduate to get permission, and then the student can make a networking contact with the graduate. This is a good way to keep in contact with alumni and increase morale of students. Students can also read success stories of other students or graduates on the website.
This has been a very helpful resource for students and graduates. The website is www.websites.usu.edu/english. If you have any other questions or comments please contact Jana Kay Lunstad at 797-3856 or jlunstad@english.usu.edu.

*Using Advising Features in SIS Plus - Heidi Beck
U code on 1C4 Screen
142 Screen
Heidi reviewed some tips for SIS plus and helping students register. She mainly covered the U code on the 1C4 screen, which is how an advisor can override a prerequisite and authorize a student to enroll in a class. Advisors should only use this feature for their own departmental
classes, or if they have permission from the department that provides the class.

If an advisor reviews the transfer credits for an individual student, the advisor should make a note on the 142 screen, so that when the student goes to register, the equivalent USU course will show up and will satisfy any relevant prerequisite checking. Questions should be directed to Heidi Beck in the Registrar's Office (797-3734 or heidi@cc.usu.edu).

*Other - John Mortensen
The Provost Office and the Cashier's Office are working together to create a system to remind students about the fee payment deadline in Fall 2003. A series of mailings and e-mails will be sent to students who have not paid their tuition and fees.

John is forming a committee to suggest improvements to the catalog to make it more user-friendly. If you would like to participate, or if you have any suggestions, please contact John.

The Provost's Office may be sending letters to students who have a semester GPA below 2.0, but still are in good standing with a cumulative GPA above 2.0. It is hoped that this tactic may prevent some students from being put on academic probation in a future term. Advisors requested that they be notified which students receive this warning letter.
