  4. Financial Aid and Scholarships
  5. Housing
  6. Update on Mathematics at USU
  7. Foreign Language

Getting Started

You do not need to apply for readmission to USU. Because you took the initiative to file an official Leave of Absence before you left, you are still admitted, and you do not need to complete additional paperwork. It is strongly recommended that you meet with your academic advisor prior to the upcoming semester registration.

Academic Advising

Contact your academic advisor for advice regarding the classes for which you should register. A list of advisors by major, and their contact information may be found here.

Registration

Registration for Summer Semester is in early April, Fall Semester is in mid-April, and Spring Semester is in mid-November. Check this Web site for exact dates: usu.edu/registrar/htm/registration/dates

After completing the above steps, you are ready to register. Please check ACCESS to determine which day you can register during fall and spring "priority registration" week (generally, graduate students register on Monday, seniors on Tuesday, juniors on Wednesday, etc.). You may register on-line via ACCESS.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

If you had a scholarship, it was placed on hold as part of your Leave of Absence, and will be reactivated as part of your return.

Please note that if you are returning in a semester OTHER than the semester you originally planned, you should contact the USU Scholarship Manager at 435-797-8847 and email leaveofabsence@usu.edu with information about your change in plans.

For other questions regarding financial aid or a scholarship, please contact the Financial Aid Office at 435-797-0173 or visit them on the web at usu.edu/finaid/.

Housing

If you are interested in USU on-campus housing, please contact our Housing Office at 435-797-3113, or visit housing’s web site at: housing.usu.edu.

Update on Mathematics at USU

USU now offers a refresher course in mathematics, called Math 0920 Math Skills Review. This course is designed for students who need to enroll in mathematics courses starting with Math 0900 Elements of Algebra and continuing through Math 1210 Calculus I and Math 1220 Calculus II, but who, due to a leave of absence, may need a brief refresher or prerequisite math skills. Math 0920 Math Skills Review will be offered at the beginning of each fall and spring semester.

The course will not be offered for credit, and students will be charged a fee of $100. This fee includes the fee for taking the Math Placement Test after attending Math 0920. In addition, if a student has taken the Math Placement Test and enrolls in Math 0920, $10 of the fee for Math 0920 will be waived. Students may only take the Math Placement Test three (3) times in a semester.

For more information, check out the Math Web site or contact the Math Advising Office located in Animal Science 117. You may reach the math advisor by email or phone at:linda.skabelund@usu.edu, 435-797-0268.

Foreign Language

If you learned a foreign language while on your leave of absence, or if you already speak a foreign language, you may be eligible to earn up to 16 academic credits by taking a language exam. Please see the Languages, Philosophy & Communication Studies Department web site for a more detailed explanation: lpsc.usu.edu.

Parents

We thank you for assisting in your son or daughter's return to USU. Ideally, your student set their securityphrase and identified you as a delegate. This process authorizes university officials to share information with you about your student's record. Please know that without this authorization from your student, by federal privacy laws, we cannot share anything other than "directory information" (name, address, major, class rank) with you.

If your son or daughter has not given you permission to access their account, they may still do so by going to id.usu.edu, choosing the “Securityphrase” option, and setting you as a delegate on their account.

Again, welcome back to Utah State University! We are very pleased to have you back. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any further questions you may have either by phone at 435-797-1132 or email leaveofabsence@usu.edu.
