Making the Most of Your Advising Visit

What is academic advising?

Academic advising is a relationship in which an advisor helps a student select, plan, and complete academic goals in a friendly and helpful atmosphere. We suggest you work closely with your advisor to plan your program of study so you will take courses in their proper sequence to meet the graduation requirements for your degree program.

How should I make an appointment with my advisor?

  • Call 797-3373 or visit TSC 304 to schedule an appointment.
  • Whenever possible, call to make an appointment rather than dropping by without one. This allows your advisor time to prepare for your visit before you arrive.
  • If it becomes necessary to drop by without an appointment, try to avoid the busiest times of the day (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.). Allow plenty of time just in case you have to wait!

How can I make the best use of my advisor?

An advisor can be helpful only if you take the initiative to use his/her skills. Here are some things you should do:

  • Keep current on academic policies, procedures, and requirements by reviewing the current General Catalog, Schedule of Classes, and major requirement sheets.
  • Understand the University Studies requirements.
  • Take the initiative to contact your advisor during office hours. It may take more than one attempt before you connect up. Schedule appointments ahead of time.
  • Prepare a list of questions or concerns before each meeting with your advisor. Have a tentative written schedule prepared.
  • Ask questions! If you don't understand a policy or procedure, ask questions until you do understand.
  • Make decisions. Your advisor will present you with options, but you must make the final decisions for your future.
  • Know the academic calendar and don't miss critical deadlines. Know when to register and drop classes. Set up appointments with your advisor well in advance of these deadlines.
  • Bring something to write with and something to write on.

Review your transcript

It is your responsibility to verify your transcript is accurate and up-to-date. At a minimum, check it at the beginning and end of every semester for the following information:

  • Are all of your AP, concurrent enrollment, and transfer credits posted?
  • Are you registered for the correct classes?
  • Are your grades accurate?
  • If you repeated a class, did you fill out a repeat form so the first grade of a repeated class will not be calculated into your GPA?
