Det 860 History

 

The following is a chronological listing of changes in the organization of ROTC at Utah State University:

1893 - Military Science first offered.

1916 - Infantry ROTC unit established

1919 - Coast Artillery unit established. Infantry unit abolished.

1946 - Quartermaster unit added to ROTC program. Air Force unit organized (under Military Science Department).

1949 - Air Force ROTC became an independent unit.

1950 - Ordinance unit added to Army ROTC program.

1953 - All Army ROTC units converted to general military science type.

1957 - Basic Army and Air Force ROTC courses changed from mandatory to elective at Utah State University.

1970 - First female students entered the Air Force ROTC program.

1980 - First female pilot candidate selected from USU.

1981 - First female Cadet Commander selected from USU.

1988 - Announcement of closure and reinstatement

1992 - Weber State University's AFROTC program placed under control of USU AFROTC.

1994 - Weber State University's AFROTC program reverts to the University of Utah.

Aerospace Studies Department and Awards

Det 860's Aerospace Studies Department is within the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS).
 
Det 860's facilities are conveniently located near the center of campus on a main thoroughfare between the parking terrace and the Field House (gymnasium), just behind the Tagart Student Center.
 
Det 860 received an "Excellent from AETC/IG QAFA Team in Fall 1994.

In CY(s) 82-83, 83-84, 84-85, and 86-87 Det 860 won the AFROTC "Superior Performance Award" in recognition of superior performance in recruiting and enrolling officer candidates to meet the needs of the USAF.
