FAQs

What kind of announcements will you send, and when?

The USU Emergency Alert system, "Code Blue", will be used to notify students, staff and faculty of unforeseen events and emergencies on campus, such as:

  • Threats to personal safety
  • Fires
  • Snow Closures
  • Evacuations
  • Severe Weather
  • Building Closures

The system will not be used to market activities and campus events to you. It is an emergency alert system. The system will be tested at the beginning of every semester.

How do I sign up to receive notifications?

Voice/Text

  • Log into USU Access and select Personal Information
  • Select View/Update USU Emergency Alert Phone Numbers
  • Enter up to 5 voice and text message contact numbers

Email

Your preferred email will also be used to send you an alert. Please update it in USU Access.

  • Log into USU Access and select Personal Information
  • Select Update E-mail Addresses
  • Follow the instructions on that page

Why do you need so much contact information?

In an emergency, we will use all available contact information in USU Access to try to reach you. The more information you provide, the more likely you will get the message.  You may wish to update your phone numbers listed under the heading Update Addresses and Phones in USU Access.

I received a notification. How do I know if it's legitimate?

Email will come from USU-Emergency-Alert@usu.edu. USU text messages will always come from 23177, and voice messages will show as (435) 797-7622.

You may want to add the above email addresses, Text/SMS number and phone numbers to your contacts/address book.

In all cases, if something about the message doesnęt feel right, please act cautiously.

Can I stop the announcements if I decide I don't want them anymore?

You can opt out of the phone and text numbers you provided under the View/Update Emergency Alert Phone Numbers area.

Voice and Text/SMS

Another way to stop your text messages from USU Emergency Alert is to text STOP USU to 23177. This will cause your cellphone carrier to block any messages from USU-EMERGENCY-Alert to you. It will not remove any numbers you have provided to use in USU Access.

I am at a Regional Campus, does this apply to me?

Phase 1 of the Emergency Alert is for the Logan campus students.  We are working to make the system available to our regional campuses, and will do so in the coming months.

Who do I call for help?

You can contact the Information Technology Service desk for help with signing up in USU Access, or changing your information in USU Banner.

My cell phone does not have texting enabled, can I still receive alerts?

Yes.  You can still sign up to receive voice and email alerts.  If you do not have text messaging enabled or do not wish to receive text messages, do not provide a phone number for text/SMS alerts.

Does changing my contact information for USU Emergency Alert also change my official contact information with Utah State University?
