USU
Ranked as Top Ten Best Buy
Utah
State University was named by Consumer
Digest as one of the best values for a public university. USU
earned the sixth spot on the magazine’s Top 50 Best Values for Public
Colleges and Universities. Over 200 institutions were evaluated
on criteria such as GPA of entering freshman and student-to-faculty
ratio. These factors were then compared with the cost of annual
tuition, room and board (USU $12,876).
Utah State
beat out such other notable schools as the University of Nebraska,
the University of Kentucky, and Texas A&M University.

Invention Could Save Airline Industry Millions
A Utah State University professor’s
invention could save the airline industry hundreds of millions of
dollars a year. Warren F. Phillips has taught in the mechanical
and aerospace engineering department for the last 30 years. By
using the principles he teaches, and his love of hang gliding, Professor
Phillips invented a new technology called Twisteron.
Twisterons work by twisting the wings
of an airplane during flight. This twisting motion reduces the
drag working against the airplane.
“Drag is what you pay for; it is a hindrance,” Phillips
explained. “In my hang glider the drag is what causes me
to eventually sink back to Earth. When an airplane like a
747 is flying at 40,000 feet, the engines are running only to overcome
the force of drag.”
This
new technology is good news for the airline industry. A 747
can burn about 75 gallons of fuel every minute. According
the FAA, US civil aviation aircraft are expected to burn more than
24 billion gallons of jet fuel this year alone. Phillip’s
invention could save the airline industry $400 million in fuel
a year.
USU is
currently looking into licensing the Twisteron technology to
commercial airline manufacturers.

Former Aggie Helps Team Win ArenaBowl Championship
Former
Aggie Joe Jacobs earned his third ArenaBowl Championship Ring, helping
the San Jose Sabercats edge the Arizona Rattlers 69-62. He
plays both offense and defense for the Sabercats, something he learned
to do while playing football at Utah State.
Jacobs was a four-year starter for the Aggies, earning Big West honors
in 1991 and 1992. He tied the school record for tackles for
a loss in a game with six, a stat that still stands today. After
spending a year with the Detroit Lions in the NFL, Jacobs played
a year in the Canadian Football League. He finally joined the
AFL in 1995.
“I was always on first defense, so when
the second defense was on the field, sometimes I would join the
offense to give the second unit a good look,” Jacobs explained.
On his way to winning his third ring,
Jacobs defeated another former Aggie, Lindsay Hassell, who plays
for the Rattlers, but is currently injured.
