New
Athletics Director Named Spetman first attended the Air Force Academy as a student, earning three letters in football and winning the heavyweight Wing Open Boxing Championship twice. He graduated in 1976 and, after receiving his commission, served as an assistant football coach at Air Force in 1977. Then in 1996, Spetman assumed his duties as athletics director at the Academy, overseeing the school’s 27-sport intercollegiate program. In addition to his work at Air Force, Colonel Spetman has enjoyed an active military career. He is a command pilot and served as Chief of Bomber Planning in Desert Shield and Desert Storm, as well as Chief, Command and Control Division, Operations Directorate at the U.S. European Command in Stuttgart, Germany. “In Randy Spetman we have a new athletic director committed to the success of our student athletes, both academically and athletically,” USU President Kermit Hall said. He and his wife, Rebecca, have two children, Brian and Kim. USU

Invention Could Save Airline Industry Millions Twisterons work by twisting the wings of an airplane during flight. This twisting motion reduces the drag working against the airplane. “Drag is what you pay for; it is a hindrance,” Phillips explained. “In my hang glider the drag is what causes me to eventually sink back to Earth. When an airplane like a 747 is flying at 40,000 feet, the engines are running only to overcome the force of drag.”

W. Bullen was born and raised in Logan, Utah, where he
graduated with a degree in business from Utah State University
in 1978. He began his professional career as general
manager of radio station KVNU in Logan. He subsequently
became president of Cache Valley Broadcasting (CVB), then
later formed JWB Cable Company, which purchased the television
assets from CVB. In 1989 he sold his cable television
interests to Sonic Cable. 
The
search is over, and Utah State
has a new athletics director. Colonel
Randall W. Spetman, former Air
Force Academy athletics director,
began his new job on July 1. 
This
new technology is good news for the airline industry. A 747
can burn about 75 gallons of fuel every minute. According
the FAA, US civil aviation aircraft are expected to burn more than
24 billion gallons of jet fuel this year alone. Phillip’s
invention could save the airline industry $400 million in fuel
a year.

Aggie Joe Jacobs earned his third ArenaBowl Championship Ring, helping
the San Jose Sabercats edge the Arizona Rattlers 69-62. He
plays both offense and defense for the Sabercats, something he learned
to do while playing football at Utah State.
