Program description
Supplemental Instruction (SI) was implemented at Utah State University in 1985, based on an international academic support model developed in 1973 by the University of Missouri-Kansas City. SI is designed to assist students in mastering material in difficult General Education courses while increasing their learning strategies and study skills. Thus, student performance is improved by combining "what to learn" with "how to learn."
Trained student SI leaders guide 2-3 one hour SI sessions per week, during which they engage students in critical thinking, questioning, and confirming their understanding of the class material. SI leaders also model and teach effective study strategies that a student can apply to any class. This is accomplished by using a variety of active learning methods, small group work, and practice quizzes. SI attendance is voluntary, no-cost, and available to any student who is registered for the course.
Goals of the SI Program
University- wide collaboration has resulted in the success and support of the Supplemental Instruction (SI) program, which serves over 7,000 students each academic year. Our analyses demonstrate that students who regularly attend SI earn better grades and withdraw less often than non-participants.
SI is designed to:
- Improve the academic performance of participating students.
- Promote an active learning environment.
- Improve studentsı analytical thinking and problem solving skills.
- Increase the persistence rate of students towards subsequent semesters and graduation.
- Provide professional development opportunities for students interested in: acquiring teaching skills, increasing knowledge in their academic field, and establishing a mentor relationship with a faculty member.
