USU MUSEUM HOSTS ‘EDEN REVISITED: THE CERAMIC ART OF KURT WEISER’
LOGAN — The Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art, located on the campus of Utah State University in Logan, hosts a major exhibition of work by ceramic artist Kurt Weiser.
The exhibition, “Eden Revisited: The Ceramic Art of Kurt Weiser,” opens Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. with a member’s only reception and guest talk by Peter Held the curator of the exhibition. A public lecture is Wednesday, Oct. 1, in the Art Department lecture hall, FAV 150 at 7 p.m. (approximately 1200 E. 700 North, Logan).
“Eden Revisited” is a survey of Weiser’s work from the 1970s to the present and offers a full view of his stylistic development.
“Considered an ‘unassuming genius’ for his technical mastery and inventive pottery forms, this is the first major mid-career survey exhibition of Weiser’s work,” Held said.
Weiser, a Regent’s Professor in the Arizona State University Herberger College of the Arts, also maintains a studio in Tempe, Ariz.
“Eden Revisited” includes 40 ceramic objects spanning 30 years of creative excellence and offers a full view of the artist’s stylistic development. The objects in the exhibition have been drawn from Arizona State University’s Ceramics Research Center’s permanent collection, the artist’s holdings and private and public collections nationwide. The exhibition began traveling in November 2007 in Portland, Ore., and will conclude at the Arizona State University Art Museum in April 2009. The Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art at USU is most fortunate to be one of only nine venues selected to host the exhibition, said director Victoria R. Berry.
In addition to the works on display, the exhibition includes a full-color, hardbound catalogue edited by Held, who organized and curated the exhibition. Held is curator of ceramics at the Arizona State University Art Museum ceramics Research Center, Tempe, Ariz.
Weiser will be on USU’s campus in November to talk about his work and to conduct a workshop. Details will be published closer to the event.
“Eden Revisited: The Ceramic Art of Kurt Weiser” has been funded by a grant from the Windgate Charitable Foundation, a major accomplishment — comprehensive support for an entire project is a rarity in contemporary craft, Berry said.
