USU ARTIST FEATURED AT NORA ECCLES HARRISON MUSEUM OF ART
The Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art begins the new year with a solo exhibition, Jane Catlin: Adaptations. An artist talk, free to the public, will be held at the Museum on the Utah State University campus on January 22, 2004 at 5 pm.
Artist and Associate Professor of Art at USU, Jane Catlin actively exhibits nationally and administers the university’s Art Education Program. In 2002, Catlin was awarded a prestigious Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, established by the late Lee Krasner, respected American painter and wife of Jackson Pollock.
Adaptations includes a series of recent artworks completed during Catlin's 2002-2003 sabbatical. The images portray her exploration of environmental changes resulting from population growth and increased consumption. She is particularly interested in the operations at twelve sites of concern that lie within a 100-mile radius of Salt Lake City; foremost is the Tooele Chemical Demilitarization Facility.
Catlin combines different degrees of magnified views of stressed biological systems on frosted mylar, canvas and handmade paper. The complex surfaces are made with diverse materials including oil paint, colored pencil, lithography crayons, gouache, and Xerox transfer.
The artist will discuss her work in a free presentation on January 22, 2004 at 5 pm. The exhibition Jane Catlin: Adaptations will remain on display through May 1, 2004.
