FALL EXHIBITIONS AT NORA ECCLES HARRISON MUSEUM OF ART
Logan, UT—The Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art ushers in the fall of 2003 with three new exhibitions: In the Spirit of the Times, New to the Collection: 2002–2003, and Clay West: 2003 Intermountain Invitational. All three feature a wide range of artwork with broad appeal.
In the Spirit of the Times, is comprised of 60 works of art from the Museum’s collection by San Francisco Bay area artists during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. With paintings, sculpture and works on paper, this exhibition provides an understanding of the evolution of the Abstract Expressionist style on the West coast. A selection of artists in the exhibition, all of whom rose in prominence during this fervently creative period from 1940 through the mid-1960s, includes Richard Diebenkorn, Manuel Neri, Deborah Remington and Emerson Woelffer. The official opening will be held Wednesday, October 8 at 6 pm, featuring a talk by guest curator Gerald Nordland, and the exhibition remains through July 2004. This exhibition has been sponsored by the Marie Eccles Caine Foundation and the Utah Arts Council.
The Museum, with a constantly growing collection, has been fortunate to acquire approximately 60 new, important artworks in varied media over the past two years. New to the Collection: 2002–2003 provides visitors highlights of these new acquisitions by veterans and newcomers to contemporary art, including Clayton Bailey, Nayland Blake, and Charles Garabedian. This display remains on view through July 2004 in New to the Collection: 2002–2003.
Clay West: 2003 Intermountain Invitational brings together artwork by ceramic artists who teach at universities and colleges in the Intermountain West. This region includes Utah, Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico and Wyoming. Over 40 artists have submitted 1 to 2 works each, from traditional vessels made with a modern twist, to wall-mounted reliefs and large-scale floor sculpture. An opening reception will be held September 19, 2003 at 6 pm. (This reception is included in the Alliance for the Varied Art’s Gallery Walk the same evening from 6 to 9 pm.) This exhibition, through December 2003, has been sponsored by Janet Q. Lawson and Frederick Q. Lawson.
