Test anxiety is mainly caused by:

  • professors testing on material not covered in class.
  • an extreme focus on grades.
  • physiological problems.
  • insufficient preparation.

Test anxiety can be caused by a, b, and c. However, for most students, the main cause of test anxiety is insufficent test preparation. If you do not study the correct material and/or do not completely understand what you study, you will have a difficult time answering test questions correctly. You may doubt your intellectual and test–taking abilities. This doubt may carry over into your future testing situations, increasing to the degree you consider yourself incapable of taking tests – in all or selected classes.
