Three tours are being planned for the NACTA/SERD 2008 Conference:
Cache Valley Food Tour – This tour will visit local food processing facilities involving different scales and scopes. Potential stops include: Gossners Cheese (cheese production, and the use of ultra high temperature pasteurization to make shelf-stable milk), Pepperidge Farm (Milano cookies), Rockhill Creamery (a microdairy with five Brown Swiss cows), and Crumb Brothers Artisan Bread.
Irrigation and Geography Tour – Observe how agriculture and Trout Unlimited collaborate to protect natural fisheries through the use of trout ladders in an irrigation distribution system. Enroute, stops highlighting Rocky Mountain geography, fault lines, and the potential of an earthquake will be explained. This tour will be the most scenic of the three tours, as we travel through Immigration Canyon and Logan Canyon, with a stop at Bear Lake. |
Integrated Agriculture/Humanitarian Tour – Tour participants will have the opportunity to observe a vertically integrated agriculture system (production, processing, and distribution) with a unique outcome – all products support a coordinated humanitarian and welfare effort. Components of the system included in the tour will be a grain elevator, large storehouse, bakery, cannery, and milk processing operation. An additional tour stop will include a tour of the Gardens at Temple Square in Salt Lake City – including a roof top native plant garden. Additional time for exploring Temple Square and/or downtown Salt Lake City will be included. (Note: This tour will return later than the other tours, with an anticipated return time of 7:00 pm. It will be possible to eat before the return trip, if so desired.)
