Friends of the Elderly is a program associated with the Val R. Christensen Service Center that provides opportunities for USU students to serve elderly people in Cache Valley.
This purpose is accomplished in two ways; either through one-on-one relationships or by participating in organized group activities held in various nursing homes and retirement communities.
The purpose of the Friends of the Elderly program is to enhance the lives of grandparents, college student volunteers, and college student leaders through relationships formed by service, love, and appreciation.
There are many benefits for those who participate in Friends of the Elderly. Through new companionships, the lives of grandparents are brightened.
Student volunteers are enriched with the opportunity to give service and to focus outside of themselves.
Student leaders who direct and supervise these programs learn and refine leadership skills in a program devoted to helping others.
The mission statement of the Friends of the Elderly is:
Through the opportunity of service and companionship, we will enrich lives, learn from experiences, and build friendships-- thereby bridging generations.
