Student Legal Services
The purpose of student legal services is to serve as an educational resource to:
- protect students rights
- educate students regarding personal and legal responsibilities
- encourage students to be a contributing member of the USU and larger community
Who can use these services?
USU fee paying students
Services provided are broadly defined and are limited to office consultations.
Appointments are available Tuesday evenings from 5 PM to 8 PM starting August 25, 2009 for the Fall and Spring Semesters.
Legal Services provides the following
- Free legal advice and confidential counseling
- Landlord-tenant relations
- Criminal matters
- Family Matters
- Consumer Matters
- Employment Matters
- Traffic Matters
- Uncontested Divorce
Limitations of Services
- Claims or potential claims against Utah State University, its employees, faculty or staff
- Claims or potential claims against the State of Utah
- Claims or potential claims against other University students
- Student Legal Services does not represent students in court
- Filing bankruptcy in federal district court (the Student Legal Services Attorney can advise a student on the legal ramifications and processes of filing a bankruptcy; the limitation is on the actual filing)
- Wills, trusts, or estate planning issues
- Contested Divorce
- Tax matters
