Research Interests

Research interests include fisheries conservation, population assessment, and trophic dynamics of aquatic systems, including both lakes and streams. Experience working both on fisheries questions and modeling as well as lake limnology and habitat questions.

Graduate Population Assessment (AWER 6550 and local chapter AFS short course)

This class is designed for both terrestrial and aquatic ecologists and fish and wildlife graduate students and managers. The course is divided into two sections with the first part covering techniques for population assessment (e.g., sampling, line transects, mark recapture, depletion methods). The second part of the class covers models for summarizing population assessment data and information including life tables, Leslie matrices, dealing with uncertainty, predicting extinction risk, and life cycle models.

Fish Ecology (AWER 6230/7230)

This class will cover basic concepts in fish ecology or fisheries management with an emphasis on lessons learned from the past and current literature .

Large River Management (AWER 6330, Co-taught with John [Jack] Schmidt)

This class covers concepts and issues of large river management and conservation including both physical and biological/ecological factors with emphasis on case studies from the Colorado, Columbia, and Rio Grande river basins.
