3:30 pm - 5:00 pm    What is Your Dangerous Idea?

Panel Discussion / Provost Office

This is the first of three events planned for a pilot Faculty Common Literature Experience program, launched in spring 2010 under the auspices of the Vice Provost for Faculty Development and Diversity. The book selected for the pilot is 'What is Your Dangerous Idea?,' edited by John Brockman, and inspired by the Edge.org annual question in 2006. In the book roughly 120 prominent modern scholars, scientists, and other researchers answer the question with short essays.
It is not necessary to have read the book to benefit from the panel presentation and discussion. A substantial portion of the book's contents is freely available online at: http://www.edge.org/q2006/q06_index.html. Many ideas in the book are quite provocative, such as exploring the use of medication to permanently alter our personalities, contemplating a universe in which humans are utterly alone, and considering the idea that the universe might be fundamentally inexplicable.

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm    Jazz Night at the Sky Club Student Dance-Only Night

Fundraiser / Music

Transformed into a 1930s Sky Club jazz nightclub, the Skyroom Restaurant is the setting for live Big Band music performed by the talented Utah State University Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble and jazz vocalists, along with special guest performance by professor emeritus Larry Smith, who will rock the Sky Club to the unforgettable jazz tunes of Glenn Miller, Bobby Darin, Ella Fitzgerald.
As one guest at last year's Jazz Night put it, "It's like we've gone back in time to a different era, it's great!" Enjoy the live music while being immersed in an atmosphere of nostalgia and swing dancing, where the dance floor will become a hot spot for the Charleston, Lindy Hop, Jitterbug and more. Punch will be served. Jazz Night benefits the USU Larry Smith Jazz Scholarship.
