12:45 am - 1:30 pm    Black Out Loud

Cultural / Access & Diversity Center

'Ahead of Their Time: Forgotten Black Intellectuals' Role in the Development of Democracy and Pluralism,' lecture by Dr. Sean Elias, visiting assistant professor of sociology. What black intellectual-activist wrote a critical reply to Thomas Jefferson's 'Notes on the State of Virginia'? Who was murdered because of their authorship of a famous early nineteenth century pamphlet protesting enslavement of black Americans? Who became a prophetic voice for abolitionism and women's rights? Whose 'Fourth of July' speech demonstrated the 'hypocrisy of democracy' for black Americans? These are a few questions, among others, that will be answered in the talk.
