3:30 pm - 4:30 pm    Larry Fox, Epidemiology of Mycoplasma Mastitis in Dairy Cows

Seminar/Symposium / Center for Integrated BioSystems

Historically, mycoplasma mastitis has been viewed as solely a contagious disease, with transmission occurring almost exclusively in the milking parlor. But not infrequently our laboratory group finds outbreaks that do not seem to be primarily explained by contagious spread at milking time. Moreover, reports in the literature over the last several decades would also suggest that transmission at milking time is not always requisite for an outbreak.
Our research efforts have tracked strains of Mycoplasma sp. in different body sites. Most often the clone that is causing mastitis is the clone found at different sites as determined by fingerprinting with pulsed field gel electrophoresis of chromosomal digests. Although a predominant clone is usually seen, other strains appear. Some of our data might even suggest a mutation from the original clone, or at least loss of restriction sites.
