This 1979 Tony Award-Winning play chronicles the true story of John Merrick, treated first as a fairground freak because of his deformed body and later exploited more subtly by Victorian society. As a carnival attraction, Merrick is known only as The Elephant Man. He evolves from an object of pity to a witty favorite of the aristocracy but longs to be treated as a man like any other.
