Honors 42nd Annual Last Lecture
Lecture/Readings
Initiated in 1976, the Last Lecture has become an important Honors Program student tradition at Utah State University. Honors students have the opportunity to nominate an outstanding professor who has made a noteworthy contribution to the education and mentorship of undergraduates, both inside and outside of the classroom. A committee of honors students selects the winner each year, giving one exceptional professor the opportunity to speak to students as if it were his or her final lecture at USU. This year, Dr. Brian McCuskey will present “Alice vs. Sherlock,” staging an intellectual smackdown between these two literary celebrities. The dreamer and the detective: who knows best how to look at and think about the world? The lecture tells the story of Alice and Sherlock going viral, following them from Victorian England to the present day, from the original stories to screen adaptations to internet memes.

Arrington Lecture Series
Arts/Entertainment
Opera comes in all shapes and sizes. Considered an elitist art form by many, it is capable of touching souls from pioneers and farmers to apostles and politicians. While it may be an acquired taste, we are lured to it via recitals, concerts, oratorios, and even Broadway musicals and anecdotal tales. There is no written history of “Opera in Utah,” and while references are random, they are consistently found when sought. The list of visiting operatic artists to the Beehive state is imposing, even extraordinary. Equally unexpected is the diversity of standard repertoire, and those works unique to, or composed about Utah. In turn, Utah’s operatic assets have given to the world’s arsenal of singers, and created an audience of unique proportions. And in the midst of these “voices” is another facet to the life of Leonard J. Arrington.
