Work in Progress Mural Project at Utah State University

Exhibition

The Work in Progress is a collage-style mural that is a stunning visualization of the impact of women on our society. It is a community project and the brainchild of Jann Haworth. To date, over 120 Utah men and women have created stencil portraits of more than 150 women who are catalysts for change in the arts, sciences and social evolution. Their portraits were then made into a beautiful collage by artist Liberty Blake. The mural is over 40 feet long and growing. A reproduction of the mural will be on view in the lower level of Utah State University’s Merrill-Cazier Library January 16 – March 29, 2018. Some 30 USU faculty and students will contribute to this mural as they propose names of women from their fields for inclusion in new segments of the mural. This project is being organized for USU by the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art who is partnering with Merrill-Cazier Library on this Year of the Arts initiative.

Jason Hardink Piano Recital

Arts/Entertainment

This evening's concert features the Utah premiere of Michael Hersch's solo piano cycle, The Vanishing Pavilions. A work that is quite likely the most important solo piano piece of this century, The Vanishing Pavilions "unfolds in open-ended, haiku-like eruptions, though built on ideas that recur throughout the 50 movements, from a lamenting, chantlike melody to passages of such speed and density you'd think the complete works of Franz Liszt were played simultaneously within three minutes." The cycle is divided into two books and lasts 2.5 hours in performance. Composed in 2005, only two other pianists (including the composer himself) have performed the cycle in its entirety.

Their portraits were then made into a collage by artist Liberty Blake. The mural is over 40 feet long and growing. A reproduction of the mural will be on view in the lower level of USU's Merrill-Cazier Library January 16 – March 29, 2018. Some 30 USU faculty and students will contribute to this mural as they propose names of women from their fields for inclusion in new segments of the mural. This project is being organized for USU by the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art in partnership with Merrill-Cazier Library on this Year of the Arts initiative. Linda Shaver-Gleason

Arts/Entertainment

Growing up in the Chicago suburb of Lombard, Linda Shaver always knew her life would be about music. She started taking piano lessons at age 4 to follow in the footsteps of her big sister, and by age 5 she was writing her own pieces for school competitions. When she was 9, she started taking viola lessons and decided she wanted to become a performer. This led to playing in the Protégé Philharmonic as a teenager, eventually becoming the principal violist.
