Black Box Competition

Student Activities

Description/Rules:
There are two categories in the Black Box Competition, the analog category and the digital contest.

Students competing in the analog category are given an analog circuit enclosed in a “black box” and are asked to draw the electrical schematic of the circuit inside. The box contains only four terminals that the teams use to make electrical measurements that help them unravel the mystery of what is inside.

In the digital contest, students are given a programmable logic device with a pre-programmed circuit. They observe the behavior of the circuit and then try to draw a schematic for the “mystery” design

Our theme this year is "Navigating the Frontiers of Engineering," be inspired while they explain why they chose to get a STEM degree and what they are doing with it today. Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering Jeff Horsburgh is challenging Utah State University students to develop a visualization of high-resolution water use data that provides visual feedback to both water providers and water consumers.
