Panel Discussion/Presentation

Sit down to lunch with Ben Kolendar, the Deputy Director for Salt Lake City’s Department of Economic Development. Prior to his current position, Ben served as Senior Advisor to the Executive Director of SelectUSA, a presidentially-appointed position and, as an official in the U.S. Department of Defense, he was dedicated to the development of Afghanistan’s economy

Ben has an MBA with an emphasis in globalization and international trade from Georgetown University and a Bachelor’s in Philosophy from USU. He is also an alumni of USU's Institute of Government and Politics internship program and one of three CHaSS Alums named to Utah Business Magazine's 40 under 40 in 2019.

Please join us for lunch and have the chance to speak with Ben directly about his experiences working in both local and federal government positions. Due to Ben's schedule, lunch will start promptly at 11:30AM.

Mental Health First Aid Training

In this training, you will learn how to recognize the signs of mental health and substance abuse problems in others and how to response in a way that is helpful and effective -- including what resources are available. The skills that you learn can be used in everyday life and in the event of a crisis, including when a person might be thinking about suicide. Specific topics include: depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction, and psychosis.

Morris Media & Society Lecture Series: Sheena McFarland

Lecture/Readings

Writer, brander, marketer and communications specialist Sheena McFarland will challenge Utah State University students, staff and faculty to stop contributing to the process of “minoritization” when she presents the 2019 Morris Media & Society Lecture.

McFarland is the director of marketing and communications at the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah, and a former reporter and editor at The Salt Lake Tribune. Born in India, McFarland was adopted as a baby by a family in Utah, and she has written with transparency and passion about growing up as a minority in one of the most homogenous states in the nation.

In her lecture, McFarland will discuss what marketers and professional communicators can, and should, be doing to ensure they are not continuing a cycle of minoritization – the process by which social constructs push people to the margins of society in ways that are far beyond their control.

The event is free and open to all members of the community.

In this public discusison about the increase in mental health needs among our athletes, current BYU and former USU Athletics’ Team Doctor, Dr. Darren Campbell, will discuss ways to recognize and treat anxiety, concussion complications, and the emotional aspects of dealing with injuries.
“Human In The Helmet” is sponsored by Utah State University Athletics, Intermountain Healthcare, and Utah Public Radio are concerned about the increase in mental health needs among our athletes.

Also, a panel of professionals, coaches, parents, and athletes will participate in a Q&A session. Breakout booths with mental health experts and support group representatives will provide opportunities to learn about mental health resources.
