Jason Hardink Piano Recital

Dr. Jason Hardink, visiting professor of piano, performs a piano recital featuring Beethoven’s epic “Hammerklavier” Sonata and Ferneyhough’s seminal work of the New Complexity movement, Lemma-Icon-Epigram. The program also includes works for piano four hands by Mozart and Beethoven in collaboration with USU piano students Ethan Seegmiller and Janessa LeMmon.

Autumn Voices

The Combined Choirs from the USU Department of Music will perform a variety of great choral music in harmony with this season of change. The USU Women's Choir, under the direction of Claudia Bigler, will perform arrangements of the haunting early American hymns "No Time" and "Come, Pretty Love," as well as the Billy Joel favorite, "And So it Goes." The USU Chorale will present Palestrina's immortal "Sicut Cervus" and the women of the choir will sing a spirited new arrangement of "Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning." The men of the Chorale will be joined by guest conductor Dr. Craig Jessop, Dean of the Caine College of the Arts, as they present two numbers from the upcoming presentation "War and the Human Heart," a collaboration with the American Festival Chorus and Orchestra. The Chamber Singers will perform selections from their upcoming album recording project "Be Thou My Vision," to be recorded in mid-October with the Grammy Award-winning recording engineer, Bruce Leek.

This concert features USU student jazz combos, directed by professors Corey Christiansen, Max Matzen, Braun Khan, and graduate assistant Parker Speirs. The combos will be performing sets comprised of well-known jazz standards and original compositions and arrangements. Jazz combos allow students to develop the skills of improvisation and musical interaction within a small group format.

Music Therapy Muses Concert

The word "muses" describes a person or personified force who is the source of inspiration for a creative artist. Greek goddesses protected music and the arts. This annual concert highlights the music therapists' creative inspiration, combining what they know about music with what they know about their client, to create a musical road to healing. Concert goers will hear original, contemporary and classical vocal and instrumental music specifically chosen to represent the experience that a music therapist might design for a client.

Bartok revolutionized string quartet writing with these pieces, and the power, poetry, and genius of these works have inspired audiences for nearly 100 years.

The Fry Street Quartet is proud to present a rare opportunity for Utahns to experience the complete cycle of Bartók string quartets over three evenings. Noted Bartók scholar and speaker Peter Laki will offer the audience his expertise and knowledge while interacting onstage with the quartet to create an unforgettable, immersive experience with these masterpieces.

The Singer as... Performer: Rodell Rosel

Arts/Entertainment

Manila native Rodell Rosel is a guest of many major U.S. opera companies including the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Metropolitan Opera. Formerly a member of the Ryan Opera Center, Rosel studied at the University of California in Los Angeles where he sang the title role in Britten's Albert Herring and the leading roles in Mozart, Rossini and Ravel. Rosel has received a third place award from the Palm Beach Opera Vocal Competition and was a finalist at the Loren Zachary National Vocal Competition. He is the recipient of scholarships from the National Academy of Recording Artists and Sciences and more.

Cache Symphony Orchestra

The Cache Symphony Orchestra was created over 35 years ago as a way for community members in the Cache Valley region to make music, meet with fellow musicians, and provide another source of fine classical music to the community. The Orchestra is made up of community volunteers. It started with only a handful of musicians and has grown to a grand symphony with over 100 members. The orchestra performs on the campus of Utah State University twice a year: winter and spring. This winter's performance will feature Gustav Holst's The Planets as well as Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto, Mvt 1.

Wassermann Festival: Amit Peled

Grammy-nominated cellist, conductor, and pedagogue Amit Peled enjoys a busy and dynamic career performing for audiences across the globe. The Baltimore Sun recently proclaimed, “Peled’s amiable and inviting personality is exactly the type everyone says we'll need more of if classical music is to survive!” Founder and Artistic Director of the Mount Vernon Virtuosi, Mr. Peled combines a growing conducting schedule, while continuing a thriving solo career performing on the historic 1733 Gofriller Pablo Casals cello personally handed to him by Marta Casals Istomin, and his professorship at the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University. In his continued quest to make classical music more accessible, Mr. Peled recently published a children’s book A Cello Named Pablo and released a new cello technique method book The First Hour.
