LUX: Light and Space Art from the Museum's Collection
This exhibit includes 17 paintings, photographs, and sculptures from the museum's collection exploring how artists have used light as a medium or subject matter. Several large pieces focus on artists who are considered to be the leaders of the light and space art movement of the 1970s. The artists in this exhibit bring up philosophical issues about how the brain perceives the world, and these artworks expand the ideas of what materials are actually considered to be art. Seven new pieces are included in this exhibit which have never been on display in the museum before. At the same time, this work creates enchanting experiences of color, shadow, and shape that are sure to entertain all ages. The exhibit also includes one of the most significant artworks in the museum's collection: a Plexiglas disc installation by Robert Irwin.
