Effective and Responsible Citation Analysis
Dr. Bruce Bugbee, professor of crop physiology in the Department of Plants, Soils, and Climate, will discuss "Effective and Responsible Citation Analysis." Citation metrics are being increasingly used by faculty to make their case for promotion. Because these data are easy to access on-line, they are also frequently used by reviewers to evaluate research accomplishments. Like any statistical procedure, citation metrics can be used and interpreted appropriately or inappropriately. This seminar will review common citation metrics (h-index, g-index, and variations) and discuss effective and responsible ways to use them to make a case for promotion. Given the variation among disciplines in citation metrics, the responsible interpretation of the data will also be discussed.
