Women's Rugby

What is Women's Rugby?

Women’s rugby is everything that every other sport is, in addition to everything they fail to be. Like the tackling in football? We’ll give you that and raise you no pads. Like kicking a soccer ball around? Kicks are just as much a part of rugby as passing is. Like playing lacrosse, but wish you could go all out the way men are allowed to? Great news: women’s rugby is the only collegiate full contact sport there is. We pass backwards; we use an entirely different dictionary that has terms like “scrum,” “ruck,” and “maul”; and we play just as hard, fast, and dirty as any men’s rugby team.

Rugby is a game for all types, both big and small. Every rugby team needs a mixture of these kinds of players in order to be successful. Some girls will be members of a rock ‘em, sock ‘em force to be reckoned with known as the forward pack. Other girls are made into backs: running up and down the field, taking the ball, and scoring it. Totaling fifteen players, these groups work together to dominate the rugby pitch.

Be warned, though: rugby embraces concepts that you will find nowhere else; comradery, among them. If you make a commitment to your team, you will find yourself with fifteen instant friends who want to teach you and support you. And while we’re all for healthy competition, after the match, we’ll leave it all on the pitch.

So, if you think you’re up to it, meet us, the Utah State Women’s Rugby Football Club, on the AGGIE LEGACY FIELDS Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00-8:00am & Wednesdays 5:00-7:00pm on the HPER West Field (Beginners Clinic) with your cleats and mouth guards, and experience for yourself what women’s rugby really is.
