Campus Rec RSS

RSS News Feeds & Podcasts

RSS or Really Simple Syndication has been incorporated into the Campus Recreation website. This service allows users to subscribe to a variety of different news feeds to get specific updates on what is happening at Campus Recreation. While RSS is a relatively new technology it has literally exploded over the past few years, growing so much, so fast, that now most folks familiar at all with the web pretty much expect to see the familiar orange rss icon on a website. Podcasts are small sound bites of news that can be downloaded to an MP3 player or to your computer. If an RSS feed has a Podcast included with it you will find the MP3 file as a link below the RSS headline. Happy listening!

How to use RSS News Feeds

RSS Feeds are quickly becoming the method of choice for web users in discovering new information on their favorite websites. What RSS does is sends a message to your RSS reader letting it know that there is new content on a specific website. This provides a much more efficient web experience, meaning instead of you visiting websites looking for new content, the new content finds you.

To make use of this wildly popular tool you will need an RSS reader. If your browser doesn't have an integrated reader you will need to look for one. Free RSS readers abound on the web so feel free to explore, or ask your friends which ones they use. One popular option is Google's free reader, you can get it at www.google.com/reader. The RSS feed subscription is very simple, typically all that is needed is for you to paste the URL or web-address of the RSS feed into your RSS reader's list of feeds. Most readers also come with instructions.
