HOW TO SUCCEED AT THE UTAH STATEWIDE TEACHER FAIR

Register for the fair and pay your registration fee at a Utah University/College Career Services Center.

Review the list of schools coming to the fair.

As you look through the materials given to you when you register, make a list of the districts coming in whom you have an interest and who are interviewing for your major.

As some districts will pre-schedule their interview appointments for the day from 8:30 to 9:00 a.m., determine which districts on your list will be doing this. Please note the number of recruiters each district is bringing so you will have some idea of how many candidates they will be able to interview. Now prioritize this portion of your list based on this information. From 8:30 to 9:00 a.m. the day of the fair you will need to go to these district tables and make appointments. As schedules can fill very fast, it is important to know your needs and priorities.

Once this is done, determine which of the districts who are seeing candidates on a first-come, first-serve basis you want to see. You may also want to prioritize this list. Once you have made appointments with the districts that are pre-scheduling their day, you can go to the other districts (in between your pre-scheduled interviews) in the order you have determined.

Talk to employers who are not busy at the moment. They may not be asking for your major, but you can find out about them and if you are interested, you can leave a resume. You never know if a position for which you are qualified may open up later.

The day of the fair, arrive early so you can find the parking lot reserved for the teacher job candidates. You will also be able to check out the location of the tables for the districts you are interested in on a map that will be given to you when you arrive. This will help you maximize your time.

Be sure to check the white change board several times during the fair. Last-minute cancellations or additions of school districts will be listed there as well as additional majors needed by different districts.

Dressing professionally and being prepared to interview with different types and sizes of school districts will be to your advantage. If possible, research their web site before the day of the fair.

A little planning on your part will make your day more successful.
