FAQ
What happens at an “intake” appointment?
You will meet privately with a career counselor to discuss your career planning goals. This appointment can last between 15 minutes to an hour. The counselor will provide a general overview of the career planning process and show you actual assessments so you can see what type of information the career assessments provide. Career planning guidance is provided based on your goals. You can choose to take an assessment(s) requiring professional interpretation or work independently.
You will be asked to complete “Background” and “Career Planning and Success Criteria” worksheets and all the assessments agreed upon prior to returning for your first “interpretation” appointment.
What happens at an “interpretation” appointment?
These interactive appointments typically last about an hour per assessment. Therefore, the interpretation process usually requires two to three additional appointments beyond the initial “intake” appointment.
You will be asked to engage in discussion about your hopes and dreams, past achievements and challenges, and any specific issues or concerns you may have. Often you will be asked to complete a bit of homework between appointments. These homework activities are designed to help you effectively learn the skills and efficiently use the resources.
Depending on your discussion goals, suggestions may be made regarding majors or occupations that seem reasonable to explore. You will also be given a variety of resources that may be useful to enhance exploration activities and decision-making strategies.
What happens at a “consultation” appointment?
These appointments can be scheduled for half an hour or an hour and may take a variety of forms. The student/client:
- Has played around with a free assessment and wants to discuss the results.
- Has chosen a major but wants information about related careers.
- Wants to discuss graduate/professional educational options and processes.
- Is a career-changer and wants to learn about the career planning process.
- Has heard about career assessment offered at Career Services (i.e., MBTI) and wants to know more about it.
