Interviewing Do's and Don’ts

No single "do" will get you the job. Any of the "don’ts" could disqualify you.


DO DON'T
Do have attractive hands (moderate nail length)
Do your hair conservatively
Do pay attention to your scent and breath
Do go to the restroom before
Do get a good night’s rest before
Do be rested and alert
Do give a firm handshake
Do wait to sit down until asked
Do have good posture
Do look the interviewer in the eye
Do use gestures if they are smooth
Do smile
Do speak confidently and clearly
Do get the interviewer’s name right and use it
Do have some money with you
Do scout the company in advance
Do take notes if you wish
Do have questions
Do research the company, the position, and the field
Do let the interviewer set the pace
Do let the interviewer decide when interview is over
Do ask when you will hear from him/her
Do follow-up
Do have extra copies of your resume and references

Don’t be late
Don’t wear an overcoat or boots
Don’t wear a lot of jewelry
Don’t have anything in your mouth
Don’t lean on elbows or on interviewer’s desk
Don’t carry oversized handbag
Don’t show nervousness (adjust clothes, hair, jewelry)
Don’t swivel your chair
Don’t go overboard with "Sir" or "Ma’am"
Don’t call interviewer by first name
Don’t have a beard or mustache
Don’t be a jokester
Don’t give one and two-word answers
Don’t hog the conversation or interrupt
Don’t use profanity or slang (even if recruiter does)
Don’t chatter while interviewer is reviewing resume
Don’t overstate qualifications
Don’t criticize present employer or get angry
Don’t feel obligated to answer personal questions but ask what the question has to do with the job
Don’t look at your watch
Don’t ask "Will I get the job?"
Don’t talk about salary unless the interviewer does
Don’t hide anything
