How To Research Companies

Researching companies is valuable at many stages in the job search process to:

  • Determine which organizations you are interested in
  • Identify contact employees within an organization
  • Gather information for writing a targeted cover letter
  • Collect background knowledge for your interview
  • Good researching sites:

  • LEXIS®-NEXIS® is a great resource available to the USU community. It provides information on over 200,000 U.S. Companies.

  • How to use Lexis-Nexis.

  • Hoover's Online has short but powerful profiles of over 15,000 companies. Hoover's reports can be accessed through LEXIS®-NEXIS® by selecting Company Financial Information and Report Type: Hoover's Company Report.

  • Experience.com provides in-depth profiles of hundreds of companies and industries.

  • Use Big Book or Switchboard to search for a certain type of company in specific areas (i.e. all Engineering firms in Sandy, UT), then look up the Hoover's report on the companies you find.

  • The USU Library has an excellent page for Business and Finance Resources.

  • The Riley Guide's Tell Me About This Employer has many other links in addition to those listed above.

  • The Vault Reports provide great company and industry information for free. More detail will cost you.

  • WetFeet gives you the scoop on the companies, industries, and careers you're considering, and advice on everything from breaking into a new industry in mid-career, negotiating salaries and stock options, to getting that ideal job, to relocating to a new city.
