UNIVERSITY OUTSTANDING
GRADUATE MENTOR AWARD - Bruce Bugbee
Bugbee is Professor of Plants, Soils
and Biometeorology. His work as an advisor and mentor to graduate
students is exemplary and stands as a model for faculty across our
campus. Dr. Bugbee's students may contact him at any time of the
day and even at night to ask questions about their academic
programs or simply to report information about their research. Dr.
Bugbee not only provides academic programs; he also serves an
outstanding role model. For example, Dr. Bugbee carefully explains
to graduate students the often difficult ethical choices that a
scientist must make, and he regularly hosts a lab seminar
regarding sound ethical practices n scientific research. Although
very busy with his own active research agenda, especially his
research work with NASA, Dr. Bugbee nonetheless finds time to take
a strong personal interest in the welfare of graduate students,
and he understands the many pressures faced by graduate students
as they progress through their academic careers. Dr. Bugbee also
works tirelessly to help graduate students find resources such as
fellowships and grants that will contribute to their professional
development, and he regularly encourages students to publish their
work and present their research findings at professional
conferences. Dr. Bugbee's national reputation in the area of plant
research and the prominence of his lab here at Utah State
contribute to the great success his former graduate students have
achieved. Dr. Bugbee's former students now hold important
positions at NASA, in several academic institutions, and in
business and industry. Because of his dedication to the welfare of
graduate students and his tireless efforts to advise and to mentor
graduate students, Utah State University is proud to honor Bruce
Bugbee with the 2001 University Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award.
