Agricultural Systems Technology and Agribusiness (Composite), BS
About This Degree
This degree is a combination of courses required for the agricultural systems technology degree and the agribusiness degree. USU is the only university in the state with this program. Students gain an understanding of agricultural, biological, and physical sciences, as well as technical and business managerial skills.
The composite program prepares graduates for managerial careers within the agriculture industry, including running a family farm or ranch. Graduates may also pursue other agricultural careers, such as working for an agricultural equipment corporation, managing a machinery dealership, serving as a sales representative for an equipment company, or serving as a farm or ranch manager.
A dual degree option (meaning students graduate with two separate degrees) is also available through the Applied Economics Department. The difference is that students in the composite program are not required to take as many higher-level math classes and theoretical economics classes.
- BS - Logan Campus
This program prepares graduates for managerial careers within the agriculture industry, and many students use it to be better prepared to run a family farm or ranch. Graduates may also pursue other managerial careers within the agricultural industry, working in the following areas:
- Technical support
- Agricultural machinery machanic
- Agricultural equipment sales agent
- Directors and supervisors of manufacturing and processing operations
- Production farm and ranch managers
Career Services provides counseling and information on hundreds of job and internship opportunities and even helps students apply and interview.
In addition to Utah State University’s admissions requirements, the agricultural systems technology and agribusiness (composite) program has additional requirements:
- Freshmen: New freshmen admitted to USU in good standing qualify for admission to this major.
- Transfer Students: Transfer students from other institutions need a 2.2 total GPA for admission to this major. Students transferring from other USU majors need a 2.0 total GPA for admission to this major.
International students have additional admissions requirements.

Professional Organizations, Honor Societies, and Clubs
Agribusiness Club: The agribusiness club is designed for students interested in agribusiness. It sponsors activities and holds meetings to help students get to know each other and to learn about career options.
Agricultural Technology Club: Student membership is generally made of agricultural machinery or agricultural systems technology majors. Students participate in activities designed to develop skills and knowledge specific to agricultural systems technology. The club also participates in numerous service projects for the community.
Collegiate FFA: Collegiate FFA is the service arm to the national FFA organization. USU Collegiate FFA members serve the agricultural industry, the agricultural education profession, and the FFA at the local, state, and national levels. Students from all majors interested in agriculture are encouraged to join.
Collegiate Young Farmers and Ranchers: The USU Collegiate Young Farmers and Ranchers chapter is associated with the Utah Farm Bureau Federation and is open to all USU students with an interest in agriculture regardless of major.
Labs, Centers, Research
With the second oldest undergraduate research program in the nation, USU offers students a wide range of opportunities to gain hands-on research experience. The Undergraduate Research and Creative Opportunities program allows students to apply for grants and receive funding. USU’s Honors Program prepares students for excellent graduate programs by helping them build relationships with professors, participate in research projects, take smaller, more intensive classes, and develop leadership skills.
ASTE Teaching Laboratory: The department’s teaching lab features a classroom, a woodworking shop, and a large work area where students have hands-on access to tractors and other agricultural equipment where they learn operation and maintenance.
