If you are interested in the nutritional needs of individuals and want to provide
nutrition advice and care, dietetics is the major for you. You will study nutrition
in depth as well as obtain clinical and laboratory experiences to master nutrition
skills to become a Registered Dietitian (RD). The RD credential is the nationally
recognized credential in nutrition. An RD is a nutrition expert and the credential
is required for most employment in the health care industry and preferred for
many other employment opportunities in foods and nutrition.
To become a Registered Dietitian you must complete a four year academic program,
a supervised internship, and then pass a national registration examination.
USU offers two programs in dietetics: The Coordinated Program in Dietetics (CPD)
and the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD). The CPD includes the supervised
practice during the junior and senior year. The DPD program requires the student
to complete a supervised practice program after graduation.
Accreditation Status
The Coordinated Program in Dietetics (CPD) is currently granted accreditation and the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) is currently granted developmental accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association, 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, IL 60606-6995, Telephone (312) 899-4727
Mission of the Dietetics Programs
The mission for both Dietetics Programs is to prepare the graduate for entry level and future practice in the area of nutrition and dietetics. The programs are committed to developing students with a commitment to lifelong learning, strong critical thinking and problem solving skills coupled with high ethical standards. The programs are also focused on preparing graduates to have healthy relationships with food and nutrition and developing skills necessary for graduates to translate the science of nutrition into the art of food.
