Step 3: Deciding on specific accommodations

As noted, accommodations are designed on an individual and course-specific basis. Stephen and his counselor sat down together and discussed some reasonable accommodations that would work in his courses.

Because Stephen had such a hard time taking notes, the DSO counselor and Stephen decided he would enroll in study skills workshops provided by the university’s tutoring center. The DSO counselor also recommended that Stephen record lectures so that he could refer back to them as needed.

Further, the DSO suggested that Stephen talk with each professor about obtaining an electronic or hard copy of their lecture notes and PowerPoint presentations in advance of class. He could then use them to direct his note-taking, allowing him to focus on the important concepts in class.

Stephen asked about ways to improve his reading. The DSO counselor made several suggestions:
