Science Unwrapped - 'Explore to Conserve: A Russian Kayaking Adventure'
7:00 PM
Inquiring minds of all ages are invited to "ride along" on a kayaking adventure with USU physicist and wildlife biologist Jeff Hazboun. Hazboun recounts highlights of his National Geographic-sponsored expedition into Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula to explore pristine, yet imperiled, salmon habitat. Hear stories of navigating waterfalls, viewing Kamchatka's many bears and marveling at Kamchatka's spectacular volcanoes. Hands-on learning activities following the talk, including an exhibit by USU Engineering's student Concrete Canoe competition team, an exhibit by the USU Museum of Anthropology about migration of ancient peoples by kayak and canoe; flotation exhibits by the USU Physics Department; GIS demonstrations of stream mapping by the USU Department of Watershed Sciences; a volcano exhibit by the USU Department of Geology and more.

Places on the urban fringe are faced with significant policy and management challenges as stakeholder interests are plural and numerous, the environmental context is shifting, and the pressures of urbanization add urgency and a sense of threat to decision-making processes. Perspectives of, and preferred management strategies for, natural resources vary among residents, public officials, and other stakeholders based on a number of factors including residential background (i.e., rural or urban), political ideologies (i.e., conservative or liberal), and the environmental imaginaries of the actor. Water, as both a physio-material and symbolic resource, is deconstructed using the case of a sheep ranch turned elite golf course in Calaveras County, California.
