New Frog Species

Ecology PhD student Rodrigo Ferreira has found a great way to incorporate environmental education into his research. He is holding a contest in Santa Teresa, Brazil, to involve local citizens, particularly school children, in naming a new frog species he identified during his research in fragmented Brazilian forests. This was the first event of this type in Brazil, and it caught the interest of state and national media.

It was featured in a state newspaper: (http://gazetaonline.globo.com/_conteudo/2013/11/noticias/cidades/gazeta_online_norte/1470056-eleicao-para-escolher-nome-de-nova-especie-de-sapo-encontrada-em-santa-teresa.html).

It was advertised by a local website

It was covered by the county (http://www.santateresa.es.gov.br/noticia/226/Nova-espA-cie-de-anfA-bio-A-encontrada-em-Santa-Teresa.html)

Biologists Cassio Zocca and Fernanda Lirio participated in the project. Check out their interview with state television here: (http://g1.globo.com/videos/espirito-santo/t/todos-os-videos/v/nova-especie-de-sapo-e-encontrada-em-santa-teresa-no-es/2995595/).
