Adopt-A-Wilderness Campaign

Each semester, ECOS heads to the Muddy Creek Wilderness Study Area (WSA) in the San Rafael Swell of east-central Utah, one of the most beautiful places in all of Utah’s redrock country. Like much of the land contained in the America’ Redrock Wilderness Act, the Muddy Creek WSA is threatened by off-road vehicles and other impacts. Although Muddy Creek, like all WSA’s in Utah, is supposed to be mostly off-limits to motorized vehicles, many ORV users tread this land illegally, crushing soils and vegetation and making the area unsuitable for Wilderness designation.

Each semester, ECOS works to prevent or rehabilitate this damage, such as by building a fence, raking out ORV tracks, and acting as a eyes and ears of the Bureau of Land Management, which is supposed to be protecting this land.
