Charles G. Darnell, Jr. was appointed as the Associate Vice President for Facilities in October 2011. He came to USU from Macomb, Illinois where he had been at Western Illinois University since December 2001. Prior to working at WIU he was at Texas A&M University from 1978 to 2001.

During his time at WIU, he was instrumental in the creation of the Campus Master Plan and assisted with such assessments and studies as science facility programming, streamlined facilities condition assessments, Utility Infrastructure Master Plan and campus capital renewal. Charles was involved in various capital projects, including the Performing Arts Center, the Quad Cities Riverfront Campus, the Multicultural Center, Spencer Student Recreation Center expansion and Hanson Field. He also facilitated two Illinois Green Governing Council Compacts signed by President Emeritus Al Goldfarb, and he helped initiate and fund the Rocky Bikes bike share program, Connect by Hertz car share program, and the landscape & food waste composting system.
