Greeting from FCHD Department Head

This is a great department where you can have experiences that will enrich your life and prepare you for your future. Our programs provide the exciting opportunity to study individual development, family relationships and consumer issues as they affect each other, and to learn how to improve the quality of life for individuals and families in many settings. Our mission is to provide high quality undergraduate and graduate instruction to help students develop greater personal understanding and prepare for successful professional careers. For those who are exploring the professional options provided in this major, we are available to answer your questions and to help you make an informed decision.

Thomas R. Lee, Department Head

The faculty in our various areas of study including Family Relations, Human Development, and Consumer Sciences possess outstanding research and teaching expertise. We also have model outreach programs through our Dale and Adele Young Child Development Laboratory, The Family Life Center, The Northern Utah Child Care Resource and Referral, and through our many Extension and outreach programs addressing issues such as quality child care, early literacy, father involvement, bankruptcy, marriage education, and mentoring at risk youth. All undergraduate students participate in practicum experiences where they have the opportunity to apply what they have learned in community settings. There is also the opportunity for students to be involved in faculty research and outreach projects.

This department is one in which students are trained to work as professionals in a variety of setting such as community agencies, youth programs, adult care facilities, health care settings, child care facilities, and other public and private organizations. Graduates from our program report that the information and skills they learned while at Utah State University in this department have served them well in their professional lives.

Utah State University is a great place to be. We hope your studies and experiences here are as rewarding and stimulating for you as they are to us on the faculty and staff in the FCHD department. We especially hope you will consider joining us in the fascinating study of individuals, families, and consumers. Doing so will prepare you for work that makes a difference to people.

Sincerely,

Thomas R. Lee, Ph.D.
Professor and Department Head
