I teach undergraduate courses in the Family Finance Emphasis and graduate courses in family resource management and grant writing. As part of the Family Finance Career Seminar class I strongly encourage students to attend the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education (AFCPE) conference each year. I teach a monthly “Financial Planning for Women” workshop to encourage women in the community to take more responsibility in planning for their long term financial security.

Dr. Lown’s research interests include women and financial planning attitudes and practices, especially in relation to retirement planning. Her research asks how to motivate women to take more responsibility for their financial security in later life. A second interest is credit overuse and consumer bankruptcy in Utah due to Utah’s high filing rate. Specifically, why is the failure rate for Chapter 13 repayment plans so high and how do successful Chapter 13 plans differ from unsuccessful plans? To what extent does local legal culture contribute to the problem of multiple filings and unsuccessful repayment plans? She has also done research on stepfamily finances and noncustodial fathers.
